Queen gets warm welcome in Iqaluit

The people of Iqaluit welcomed the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh Friday with songs and traditional ceremonies as the royal couple made the first stop on their 11-day Golden Jubilee tour of Canada.

Dressed in a tan coat and fur-trimmed hat, the Queen was welcomed by officials including Governor General Adrienne Clarkson and Heritage Minister Sheila Copps. She also accepted a bouquet of flowers from 10-year-old Louis Ellsworth and nine-year-old Leevee Arlooktoo.

Crowds lined the streets to get a glimpse of the Queen . "She's like a role model. People look up to her," said one spectator. Flags snapped briskly in the wind as light snow fell.

It's the Queen's 20th visit to Canada as reigning monarch and her third trip to Iqaluit, which is celebrating its status as the capital of Canada's newest territory.

Queen drops puck, raises cheer

It was not a Stanley Cup game. But then again Lord Stanley was only a governor general and the person at centre ice Sunday night was the Queen.

For the first time in her 50-year reign, Canada's head of state dropped the ceremonial puck at the start of a hockey game.

Queen visits Canada

Queen Elizabeth admires Canada's multicultural identity, and is proud of the role she played as it formed, she said in a speech on Monday.
